Catch the Kent Football Show Episode 6
Episode Six of Kent FA’s online television show features a Kent goalkeeper enjoying international success, while also celebrating a range of positive stories from the Kent game.
Witnessing talent that has come up through the Kent youth ranks thriving on the international stage can help to inspire future generations of footballers in Kent.
The story of Zaira Aimey, who developed her goalkeeping skills with the Kent Emerging Talent Centre and now plays for Welling United, is one of many motivating tales featured in the new edition of the Kent Football Show, which is available to view now.
Zaira was recently called up to represent Trinidad and Tobago in the Concacaf Under-17 Championship – an event that acts as a qualifying tournament for the FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco later this year and saw her Trinidad and Tobago side drawn in a group with the US Virgin Isles, Honduras and Belize.
The teenager shot-stopper came through the Kent Emerging Talent Centre, which incorporates training sessions for under-13s up to under-16s as well as performance analysis, specialist workshops covering topics such as psychology and nutrition and fitness testing using elite equipment and facilities at Canterbury Christ Church University.
Zaira is now part of the Welling United squad, and it was through contacts at her club that she got the opportunity to train with the Trinidad and Tobago set-up last summer.
“It seems that I impressed enough to get to go back and I got picked for the tournament in January, which I really enjoyed,” Zaira told the Kent Football Show.
“It was a great experience, playing internationally against some big teams like Honduras which was definitely a challenge, but it was a great challenge to have, and I learnt a lot about my team and a lot about playing football at that level.”
Zaira told the Kent Football Show how rewarding goalkeeping can be, even if it is challenging, and she has already received her next international call-up.
“Goalkeeping’s definitely a unique position; you’re using your hands, you’re jumping about and it’s really nice when you make that save for your team.
“I know goalkeeping can be difficult at times, it’s difficult to keep positive when you make a mistake, but my advice to young goalkeepers is to stay confident, stay bold and your hard work will pay off - just keep working and I’m sure you’ll achieve what you’re dreaming of.”
